The variety of different sources and literary styles make the use of a bibliographic management program in the bachelor thesis absolutely recommendable so as not to lose track of the sources. In addition, it can be ensured that the citation has been correctly quoted throughout the bachelor thesis. Endnote is one of the most well-known bibliographic management programs and therefore we would like to introduce it to you in this post.
What can EndNote do?
The program EndNote is English-speaking and therefore very popular internationally. It offers a variety of functions:
- Manage and organize literature
o Different types of literature (articles / papers, books, lectures, homepages and other online sources, etc.) can be collected and managed. The creation of bibliographies makes it much easier to keep track of the literature that has been read and used. Various filter functions can also be used to quickly and easily find specific literature.
- Link to word processing programs
o EndNote offers add-ins for Microsoft Word, Apple Pages and OpenOffice. The advantage here is of course in an automation of the citations and the source / bibliography. How it works is described in the last section of this article.
- Creation of citation styles
o The program can choose from approximately 6000 pre-installed citation styles. It is also possible – and often necessary – to create your own citation styles. The supervising chair of a bachelor thesis always gives very precise and detailed guidelines for the design of a scientific work. Here, a lot of time and manual adjustments in the text can be saved if, at the beginning of the writing phase of a thesis, these specifications are entered in a template in EndNote.
- Researching in Databases and Libraries & Importing
A helpful feature is the integrated online access to various scientific databases such as Web of Science. Relevant articles or papers can then be imported and stored directly in EndNote.
- Synchronize literature lists on different devices
o The EndNote license is tied to one user but can be installed on three different devices. This allows you to synchronize a PC in the workplace with the home computer and a laptop, which eliminates the possibility that already read and managed literature is lost due to different work statuses. In addition, a web version of the program will be provided. With the help of an own EndNote account, the personal literature list can be accessed at any time over the internet.
Where do I get EndNote?
Many universities and colleges offer user licenses for their students. These are valid for the entire duration of enrollment. In most cases, such reference management programs are available via the respective library homepage. The download takes place via a university-internal link, after having logged in with the student ID. Also, the library often offers courses for learning the right citation. For example, the TU München has linked a publicly accessible collection of eTutorials to learn about the functionality of the program and to cite it correctly.
How do I quote correctly?
EndNote can automate the insertion of quotes and the creation of the bibliography during the writing process. Prerequisite for this is a maintained literature list. Because: EndNote refers to the creation of the bibliography on your entries in the program, and is no error message in the absence of important data, such as the year from.
EndNote is a very powerful program and can directly from online databases all relevant information from a literary source. However, errors can occur if, for example, the capitalization of a title was not correctly stored. Therefore, EndNote does not have to trust blindly, but in any case again to check the entries in detail.
EndNote offers add-ins for all popular word processors. Here, the operation is now easy and fast possible – so much time can be saved during the writing process. At the appropriate place in the text you can use the add-in to search the bibliography for keywords (title, author, etc.) and insert the corresponding page number to which the specific quote refers.
Once a source is used in the text for the first time, EndNote automatically creates an entry in the bibliography. If the quote is deleted during a revision of the text, the entry in the bibliography will be deleted. This minimizes the susceptibility to error in the bibliography reference to literature, which is not used in the bachelor thesis. This is a very useful feature, especially for extensive scientific theses.
The FU Berlin offers a good and short article that explains the necessary settings that have to be made in EndNote to get the quotes and the bibliography in the desired style.
For an extensive training, the official manual is helpful – which is also available in English for free download.
